LOCAL AND GENERAL.
It is duly notified m the Gazette under the hand of the Hon. J. Ballance, Minister of Lands, that his Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint Edward Alexander Haggen, Esq., to be a member of the Land Board for the Land District of Hawke's Bay. Date of appointment, 22nd November, 1884. ' It is reported that the natives propose cutting up into suitable blocks the whole of their lauds m the Seventy-mile Bush, and disposing of them by sale or lease. Should the report be true, xve(Telegvaph) think the Government should interfere to prevent the total destruction of the forest by insisting on ample reserves being made. As showing how much Hawke's Bay loses from the want of a harbor at Napier, we (Telegraph') may mention that any number of fat cattle may be bought here at 15s per 1001 b., while m South Australia the price is 455. Hawke's Bay, however, cannot take advantage of an outside market through the absence of any facility for shipping cattle. When the railway is opened to Tahoraite, the journey from Napier to Wellington will be easily accomplished m a day and a half. Leaving Napier by the earJy trrin, Masterton can be reached the saint night, and Wellington by midday the following day. On leaving Napier by the 3 p.m. train Woodville can be reached that night, and Wellington the following evening. The Telegraph hears that the railway authorities will be ready to open the line from Napier to Tahoraite by the 15th December. A cheap excursion on tbo occasion of the opening would be both popular and remunerative. When the line was opened to Kopua we remember that return tickets were issued at 10s, the result being that 600 excursionists were carried by train on that day. A section of land m Cuba-street, Wellington, possessing a frontage of 20ft and a depth of 1030 ft, has been sold to Messrs Hallenstein Brothers, of Dpnedin for the sum of £1000 The price realised is at the rate of £50 per foot. During the progress of the Waring Taylor case m the Magistrate's Court last week Mr Jellicoe, the prosecuting counsel, complained that the the accused, who was sitting by the side of his lawyer, had been smiling at him. Mr Shaw objected that his learned friend had no right whatever. to malee such a remark, and Mr Jellicoe retorted that he was justified m calling the atteution of the Court to what he considered the misbehaviour of the prisoner. His Worship said he did not think that anything the prisoner had done had been intended as a slight upon anyone. The examination of the witnesses m the box was then resumed. The s.s. Waverley returned to Wellington from Gore Bay early on Saturday morning, with a cargo of iron recovered from the Lastingham. The grcaetr part of this was raised while the Waverley was m Gore Bay, being the first day for the past. week during which the divers could work on account of the strong N.W. wind blowing. If the present favourable weather lasts for a, few days, Captain Grant expects that he will have about 250 tons of railway iron ready to send over. In our advertising columns the Manchester Road Board invite tenders for the maintenance of the Pahnerston-Gorge-road and the Feilding-Ashurit-road. Referring to our recent paragraph about Pearce and Miss Carmichael, the two survivors of the Loch Ard having gone n:ad, the Napier Telegraphremarks :— " The first part may be true, but the second Is not. Miss Carmichael has kept up a constant correspondence with Mrs Gibson, at whose station she received every kindness after the Loch Ard wreck, and some months ago was happily married," I
W. Waring Taylor was committed to take his trial at the next ensuing sittings of the Supreme Court on the fiist of a series of eleven charges to be preferred against him for alleged frauds m connection withcertain trust estates committed to his care. Mr Wardell, R.M., allowed bail m a total of £3000. The prisoner, at the conclusion of the preliminary examination, was removed to the citylockup, where he remained incustody for several hours, until the arrival of Messrs A. Young and the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn. Taylor was, at 9.30 p.m., liberated on undertaking of the above-named gentlemen to surrender the accused at the time m their respective bonds. At the same time bail m the amount of £1000, with two sureties of £1000 each, was accepted for the appearance of the accussd at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday next to answer the second of the charges preferred against him, the bondsmen being the same as above. The Catlin's River railway is to be completed to the South Molyueux Road without delay. The Public Works Department have received instructions to accept the lowest of the tenders sent m some time ago for the work. The Chronicle understands that Mr Timtus has taken out two summonses against Mr Spurdle, Mayor-elect, for amount of penalty alleged to have been incurred by acting as a councillor while being concerned iv work to be done for the coiiucil. On dit (says the Chronicle) that the Native Minister has one or two appointments m view that will certainly not receive the endorsement of the public. There were registered m Wellington during the present month 99 births and 28 deaths, and 29 certificates of marriage were issued. It was reported by some of our contemporaries that the office of the District Engineer, Mr J. T. Carr, has been removed from Kopua to Woodville. We (Napier Telegraph) are authorised to say that no such removal has been made.
