Manchester Road Board.
A meeting of this Board was held on Saturday, at 2 p.m. Present— Wardens Macarthur (chairman), Lethbridge, Bailey, and Grammar. The following correspondence was read; — From Mr T. Masters. requesting permission to fell bush adjoining his section No. 8, on the Stoney Creek road. From Mr A. S. Baker, solicitor, (held over from last meeting), re costs in the late action, "Adsett v. Manchester Road Board." Mr Baker waited on the board in support of his claim, which amounted to £104 15s 6d. A letter was also read from Mr Hankins on the matter. The question was ultimately reserved for decision at the next meeting. Warden Grammar said he would wish to see Adsett's case settled. The Chairman stated that nothing could be done at that meeting. The Chairman stated that their application for bridges (£5000) would be granted in full, and it would now be necessary to take the vote on the matter and define the separate rating district. It was stated that the bridges for which the grant was applied for were the Manawatu bridge at Ashurst and the Oroua bridge at Feilding, the annual payment for which would be only £180, which it was expected. would be fully covered by the receipts from the Gorge ferry, which at present yield £184. The following resolutions were then passed as to the special rating districts:— "That the following be the district to be rated under, 'The Roads and Bridges Construction Act, 1882,' for the one-fourth of the money necessary to construct a bridge over the Oroua River, near Bull's mill— namely all the portion of No. 5 Ward lying between the railway line and Reid'sline, and sections 17 and 16, subdivision O, sections 32, 31, 30, 29, 28, 27, and 26, subdivision H, and that portion of the Government totara reserve, lying on the north side of Reid's-line, and the section known as Menzies,' and the sections 1 and 2, subdivision G." "That the following be the district to be rated under 'The Roads and Bridges Construction Act, 1882,' for the one-fourth of the grant for the construction of a bridge at the lower ferry, Manawatu Gorge—namely, No. 6 Ward, Manchester Road District.'' The Chairman stated that, in view of the Government scheme of local government coming to anything, he would like to see the so-called County Council called into existence. There were only four local bodies in the district, and the chairmen of the same would have to meet and elect two other members to make up the number. An estimate of the engineers for the maintenance of the various roads in the district was then read. Warden Grammar moved, "That tenders be called for the maintenance of the Palmerston-Gorge-Road, from the boundary of the Manchester Block to the Gorge, for one year." This was seconded by Warden Bailey, and carried. Proposed by Warden Bailey, and seconded by Warden Lethbridge, '"That tenders be called for the maintenance of the Ashurst-road, from the Oroua River to section 17A, No. 5 Ward, for the term of twelve months." — Carried. Resolved, "That Messrs Lethbridge and Downes be allowed to fell bush on the road opposite section 20, subdivision A, at the rate of 30s per acre. Resolved, "That Mr Masters be allowed to fell the bush on the roadline opposite section 8, on the usual terms. The board then adjourned.
