The "Honse of Commons yesterday, I»y a majority of nineteen* votes, rejected tho motion for an inquiry into the existing depression m trade and agriculture of Great Britain. During ike debate, Mr Childers, Chaucellor of the Exchequer, deprecated any re. , sort to protection, and declared the adoption of a British zollverein to be impossible.. The consideration of the Australasia Enabling Bill by the Britikli Parliament, it is now generally, anticipated, will be postponed until the session of 1885. It is considered probable that the Agents-General of the several Australasian colonies will apply for an early interview with M. Ferry, the French Premier, with reference to the Becidiviste Bill, provided that the Earl of Derby approves of the proposed interview. Nov. 3. _ The Times this morning contains an article upon the proposed federation, of the Australian Colonies and the action of the New South Wales Government. Jt eulogises the course pursued by New South Wales, believing that any iedeiation movement of the present time is premature, and that the powers to be conferred on the proposed Federal Council are excessive. It is reported that China is unwilling to avail herself of the offers of mediation on the part of England and other Powers between her and France. The municipal elections through* out Great Britain have resulted m ~ the return of a majority of Liberal candidates. The distress which at present prevails m the iron and shipping trade of England is said to be greater than, for many years past.
