A man named Peter Jncobensen bus been charged m VVanganui with failing to provide for his wife and family. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. The Marton Royal Rifles Annual Picnic and Sports had to be abandoned on Monday on account of the weather. - The elections for the Rangilikei and Manawatu County Councils were held to-day. We have to direct the attention 'of owners of horses intended to run at the Palmerston Summer Meeting to the fact that the nominations will close on Saturday next at 8 p.m. We hear that there are one or two cases of typhoid fever m Palmerston, one of them being considered critical. The weather has been proverbially unfavourable to the sanitary condition of the town, whence probably the amount of sickness now existing. The direct steamer Ruapehu arrived at Dunedin to-day from London. ; We have to-day been shewn copies of Mr Shailer's photo Christmas cards, which are really interesting souveniers. The views comprise glimpses of local scenery, the sketch of the Manawatu Gorge being particularly life-like and easily recognizable. Some forest glades are also very faithfully depicted. Alto- i get her the local production is creditable | alike to the artistic skill and taste of Mr Shailer, and should be m large demand. We understand that their merits are being substantially recognized, and that there is no lack of purchasers' for the very appropriate and interesting' memento from residents of New Zealand for friends at a distance. A wool sale was held m Christchmch yesterday when the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company submitted a large catalogue. Tho wool chiefly consisted of scoured half-bred sorts, 'for which there was animated competition, the prices for the former touching lOd and the latter 8d per pound. Greasy merinos were m small supply and fetched. up to 9d, scoured merino up to 16fd,and scoured half-bred to 14d. Mr Rutherford, formerly with Messrs Haukins and Baker, returned to Palmerston on Monday and intends remaining here. We are glad, to welcome him back. Messrs Stevens & Gorton announce their next stock sale at Bulls to take place on Tuesday next, commencing ai 1 p.m. The catalogue appears m the advertisement. A dog belongiug to Mr Granfield, painter, being upstairs m Mr Hoe's rrew building, hearing another dog barking m the street made no more ado. but jumped through the window to the ground below, fortunately without hurt* ing himself to any great extent. One of the slips on tho Gorge road has been cleared away but the largo one still blocks the way for vehicles, only horsemen being able to pass and even they incur some risk as there is only a space of two feet to pass along. Several places along the road show signs of further slips coming down. ■' About 14 cows were to-day taken from this part of the district as milk supplies to the Woodville dairy factory, j The Wairarapa sailed from Melbourne yesterday for the Bluff, from whicb latter port the Rotomahana arrired at Melbourne to-day. By a special to the Standard received as we went to press we learn that 98 deaths from cholera occurred at Paris on Monday. A Maori whare was burnt down at Tologa Bay, East Coast, and an old Maori woman was burnt to death. Two Maori women tried to rescue her, ■ but < got nearly suffocated. . .■■
