Police Changes.

|ir ,S. Mi, Baker, of Foxfcbn, writes to* the editor of the Stajtdabd as fol-lows:-—"I am ribrry to see mention nifide m your paper of Monday, that I had circulated a report that certain changes were to be made m the. police department m this District. 1 can? not imagine how such a report should be circulated, as I den; having made such a statement. I wish you could kindly state who your authority was, as 1 liave not spoken to you myself aboutit, nor have 1 ever heard that such changes as thdse mentioned are '■ to take place. I would ask you therefore to be good enough to correct the statement made' m your paper." In reply we may state that we have sinbe placed ourselves m communication with our correspondent m Feilding, who simply assures us that the original statement as published m our issue of Monday is correct. ' . He say s • '•'■«« Surely M r Baker will not deny being m Feilding, and having a conversation, on the;subjectof police i lunges. ' He may have foi^- ' gotten 'the circumstance, though I scarcely think such is 'possible. That he did make the statement I- sent you tarn positively assured, I considered him a very reliable authority on the subject, I knew he was on particularly close terras of intimacy with l Mr Ward, R.M., and also with. Mr Russell, J.P., who is a pkitieular personal .friend of Inspector , James, arid would therefore probably be aware of the changes about to take place. I see that the Feilding Star published a i similar rumour, for which no doubt it had sufficient foundation. If'Mr Baker .did not wish the statement to obtain currency, he should not have set it agoing, as lie most certainly did. 1 should' not have sent' you the information Hud I not been assured of the correctness of my facts."
