Manawatu Road Board.
A special meeting of the above Boiml was held on Friday, to consider matters m connection with the Awa« huri Bridge. The wardens present were G. M. Snelson, Esq., (chair), and Messrs Sly, Mathieson, and Edwards. A telegram had been received from Mr Macavthur on Tuesday last, suggesting that the Manawatu County Council and the Manawatu Road Board provide one-fourth of the amount required, and by so doing get the money at once. Also that Mr A. Me Donald if applied to might advance the amount so as to avoid delay. Mr McDonald had since replied to this latter suggestion to effect that he was not ut present m a position to advance the amount, but would be willing, if necessary, to join m a guarantee to the bank xor the sum rei quired. The Chairman pointed out that it wns really through a lapsed vote which should have gone to Otago that the Board had been successful m obtaining the grant. The Engineer stated that the plans formerly prepared by Mr Bray, of Fielding, and which were before tha Board would require altering, as the position of the banks and the river course batLconsiderably changed since they were drawn. The Chairman thought that the Engineer of the Foxton Council and Mr Armstrong would be able to ur- „. range the necessary alterations m the plans and thereby obviate the neces- : sity of going' to further expense ia preparing fresh ones. Warden Sly suggested that instead of going to the expense of taking a poll of the ratepayers to levy a rate, that the amount be distributed over the various Wards according to the valuation of each Ward. Warden Sly advanced m support of hw suggestion that the bridge was one of as much importance to and u^ed by. the Fitzherbert wards, as those wards immediately udjacent, and that m raising the sum required, viz., £100, by this Road Board and the same amount by ■the Manawatu County Council it would be so distributed as not to weigh heavily on any one- concerned. Mi* Mathieson agreed with Mr Sly and thought this would be the most satisfactory way of dealing with the matter. A discussion took place on the mat. ter of raising the £200 between the two Boards and the possibility of the Manawatu Couuty Council not being m a position to at once advance their bhare of £100. On the suggestion of the Secretary it was decided to communicate with the Chairman of the Foxton Council and ascertain their intentions regarding the matter. Mr Edwards stated he was goiug to Foxton on Saturday and it was unanimously resolved that Mr Edwards interview Mr 'f hynne, and lay^ the position of affairs before him. The following resolution was carried : — Proposed by Snelson, seconded by Warden Sly, and carried — That the Engineer of the Manawatu County Council be invited to consult with Mr Armstrong, and for them to visit the Awahuri Bridge without delay, and hand m to the Manawatu Road Board a report of the additions necessary to be done, and also it advisable amend the plans m accordance with the instructions suggested. The meeting then adjourned.
