A Protest.

(TO THE EDITOR OP THE STANDARD.) , , Sir, — By your report of Borough Council meeting, I uotice that Mr Akers, of Rivenlale, is asking for a refund of impounding fees. ■ Although it does not directly coucern me, yet 1. feel it my duty, and m the interest of •die Council, to: more fully explain tlfjs mutter. Mr Akers' application arises out of the late action, Andrew Clausen v. Win. Akers, for wrongful conversion of cattle. As - the matter whk fully ventilated m, Court, artd; reported m your columns, it, behoves me not to repeat that over again., I am not of au unchristian disposition, nor do 1 harbour any ill-feelings whatsoever against Mr. Akers or. anybody, but iv this particular instance I have no sympathy with liiin, buj^ hope the Council will recain the fees 1 ightly and properly claimed. Mr Akers had no occasion to put our •cattle m the pound, as he knew* perfectly well- thi^ belonged to U", und : miifht, at least,- have assisted m bringing them back. On several ofcasijons >?e have interviewed him, and tiried to come to terms m a neighbourly and friendly manner ; but' all of, no • ! avail, ; he desired to let the law* test the point, aud the consequences he must how bear. I again say, m conclusion, it was i Mb own fault. The Borough Council is quite justified m noi granting the application for re-eMibiusiteent of the impounding fees, as fhere is ho reasonable claim for so doing on Mr Akers' part, ami the Council can appropriate its money to butter purpose. The length of my letter clajms an apology which I herewith tender; being my first appearance m your I correspondence columns, but feeling that this explanation to*e simply my duty, and m the interest of the Borough Council, you -will, I hope, readily grant insertion of my soni-munication.^-l am, &c, Andrew Clausen.
