A petition from the Manawatn "Road Board, praying that the Wellington College Reserves Confirmation Bill be not passed, was presented on Wednesday (says tho Post) to the House by Mr Macarthur. ' This Bill, which, after careful cnquiry,has passed through the Local Bills Committee of the Council, with verbal amendments, finally came .on for second reading m the Council when Mr G. M'Lean said the Mayor and Councillors of Palmerstou Nortlt wished to oppose the Bill ami to be heard against it before a committee. Messrs Dignan, Ackland, and Barnicoat said the matter had already been fully inquired into, and it was no use sending the Bill back. The second reading was agreed to, on the understanding that its opponents could petition against it. : Mr. Watson, evangelist, is to preach m the Gospel Hall to-morrow eveuing, at 7 o'clock. A fourteen column supplement is published with to-day's issue of the StandMr W. T. Wood leaves for Tasmania early next week. The Assembly Ball at the Club passed off very successfully last night, and was greatly enjoyed by those present. Dancing was kept up till nearly daylight. 1 We understand a grand concert will be given m connection with the English Church here early next month. Tho Masonic Ball will take place ou ' the 9th uf November, and is looked forward to with pleasurable anticipation by a large number of people. The installation of officers of the Manawatu Lodge E.C. will tuke place on the 23rd inst., and after the ceremonial there will be a banquet. Mr Bryant bus been elected W.M., succeeding Mr A. Nanuestad m that position. The forty-first anniversary of the Wesley Church Sunday School, Wellington, is to be celebrated by special services tomorrow. The programme of the athletic gathering, to be held under the auspices of St. Peter's Club, will appear m Monday's issue.
