Picnic and Athletic Sports.
A meeting of the Sports and Picnic Committee- was hold afc Mr Hauk i ris\ office last evening. Prentm t^Messrs ParJc,Skerman, Watson, Hankins, Podevin, and Haultaiu (Secretary.) | It was resolved that those present be a committee to carry out the picnic and athletic sports to take place on the 9th November and to hiive pewer. to add to their number. The following events were decided upon :— Handicap Races, including 1 100 yards, mile, do.y walkings and hUvdles. Also high and long jump; vaulting with, pole, juvenile races for boy a and givls, and sack race. .. A novel feature m the programme' is a ladies', egg and spoon raco, 50yds, to be oonducted m the following. man. ner. Each lady at starting is presented with a spoon m which an egg is placed, and the one successful m bringing the egg and spoon first to the winning post takes the prize* > Another interesting race is one: for gentlemen, called smoke and saddle pony r/MJiy under the following Iconditions. At the starting point each competitor stands alongside his pony with saddle m one hand and cigar m the other, on the .starter giving the ; required notice each one saddles and lights his weed and gets away j when some distance they dismount, remount on the offside and return with cigar alight. There \k also to be the usual happy display of babies m show array. , A merry-go-round is to be ereptcd'and a band will be m attendance.' ,, . j Mi* Fraser has been arranged with ' for the catering. About£2o, will, it is expected; b# expended m prizes.^ It is; as yet, uli.decided where xhe sports will beheld, but, ho doubt, the comniittce will succeed m finding a suitable ground; and with fcuch a capital programme aB they have urranged'the sports and pic-nic should be a thorough yucceis. Mr Haul tain has spared no pains to render every assistance m his power to carcy ; out the necessary arraiiwements amd make the affair as alluring m ploiht 6t'ifltere<iting evont* as could be; and we have no doubt, his indefatigable exertions will be rewarded with ft very successful result,
