Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1884. FROZEN MEAT.

The announcements made recently that the frozen meat ex Coptic was selling at London at 7d per lb., is one which must have proved exceedingly gratifying to all New Zealand producers. To North Island settlers especially the information would be particularly welcome, as the greater part of the Coptic's cargo was put, on board at Napier, the Messrs Nelson of that place having shipped no fewer than 6000 carcases, This sudden rise from 5Jd, ('observes the Auckland Herald) the latest previous quotation, may to some extent, it is true, have been the result of a special demand m the market, caused by a diminished supply either from foreign or ' local sources, or perhaps from both. Still, making allowance for this, there is good regson for concluding that it is to be chiefly accounted for by the fact that the superiority of New Zealand mutton over that furnished from other quarters is being steadily acknowledged m the home market. In some measure it may also be due to the better arrangements which interested parties m London have been endeavoring to make for the storage of the article when the demand is limited and for placing it m the market under conditions favorable to its profitable disposal. Taking a conjunct view of the circumstances, the conclusion may, we think, be warrantably made that matters are settling down into that normal condition which would justify the expectation that sixpence per lb, will be the average price realised m the home market for New Zealand mutton. This is the price 1 which, by a general consensus of opinion, has been agreed on as a paying one, and the prospects of the trade m. London seem to favour the belief that, with ordinary care on the part of shippers, it may readily be attained.
