Mistaken Identity.
A somewhat, amusing mistake has I occurred m connection with the North Island Trunk ; Bail way Eoute Com-i mittee. Amongst the witnesses, whom it wasx.4e§» me 4 4^ BH*aM?8 H* a M? to examine was Hft'&.,T* WlkinhQn, i( a wellknown native agent and interpreter, formerly resident at the-Thames, ; and * now living m Auckland. A Sunixnonsr was. duly forwarded, us it was Relieved, , to him, but it appeals there are two Mr VS^ilkinsons m Auckland, and both are late Thames, residents. When the committee met yesterday tnorningf to take Mr Wilkinson's evidence, it turned out that the witnenß m attendance was Mr William Wilkinß6nj.:formerly proprietor of the Thames Advertiser, and not Mr Wilkinson, the native agent. As.newspaper men are, however, supposed to know every thing, Mr William Wilkinson was duly examined, and gave the committee some evidence as to the . mineral resources of some of the country to be traversed by the railway. Hi» evidence must, however, have Been of a hearsay character, for his peraonal acquaintance with the country is vevy limited indeed. Mr Wilkinson arrived by the Wanaka m the morning, and left again for Auckland by the Waira^Pa^t i night. He has had a quick round trip atGovemment expense, through somebody's mistake. .
