McKeltje and McMjkk Action for £1000 damages for a libel alleged to liHve appeared' in the Manawatu Standard daily, uewapaper. ...„;'■■ . ■i'if/^% The following special jury were em-pannelled:^-W. Alexander,* H. Peake, W. Currie, J, Stone, G. King, Thomas Bamber, A. Tod, C. W.i Gewper, J. W. Peake, D. Peat, E. Broughton, and J. Lethbridge. Mr D. Peat wag chosen foreman. : T i , Messrs Izard and Fitzherbert were for plaintiff, and Messrs Shaw and Hawkins foi defendants. This action arose fiom the publication of an article m the Manawatu Standard with icfcience to certain matters affecting G. W. Russell, at that time proprietor of the Manawatu Times. It appeared that some time ago, a good deal of public feeling had boon displayed by the residents m. Palmerston North, regarding certain nctiom which the plaintiff m this .action, (Mr G* W. Russell) had taken m order to secure the removal of police Constable Gillespie from the district. ' From this arose the two following articles m the Standard.
