In view of the serious complications arising between France and China, we give the f«)llowing information as to the strength of : the Gelestials* China has been spending annually about .eighteen millions sterling 1 or. her army. So far from its -being true that" China has no army, 'only a rabble armed with gingals, opium pipes, and fans," she possesses, m addition to the regular Banner Army, a force for the defence of Pekin and'the coast, 1,000,000 strong, armed with modern breech loaders, and trained according 1 to German regulations ; and behind these w Ihe Green Flag Army, or national -Militia^ -over 600,000 strong scattered throughout the eighteen different provinces.
