Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, SEPT. 25, 1884. PASTORAL AND AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

It is a matterof general remark by strangers who visit this district that with all its advantages the Manawatu cannot boast of possessing a Pastoral and Agricultural Society. It is not necessary to recount the advantages, direct and indirect, which accrue from the establishment of an institution which gives settlers an incentive to improve their stoqk. and m other respects to* keep pace with the rest of the world m agricultural Seeing that the Manawatu will be one of the most important small farming districts m the colony it would be strange indeed if we were long without a well organised Pastoral and Agricultural Society. The great error which has been committed m the establishment of societies of this kind, has been that the promoters have attempted too much at first, and the society has been crippled before it could be said to be well established. A Foxton correspondent thinks that a show might be held m Falmerston before the end of the year, we are inclined to agree m the view he takes, but the great thing necessary is energetic r action. We have no , doubt that there are many who Would be"' willing to move m this 1 direction and take the matter up m I a spirited manner, but it should not , be left to those m the towns alone ! : as/"Tn b'st ofThtr public men have i /their hands full of local , affairs and, ! therefore, those more directly m- 1 I terested should take the initiative. A fahow might be held, say m Niivembeir, at very-.little cost by making temporary .. arrangements, perhaps with one of the. auctioneers, to use their yards, and by merely giving nominal prizes the first year. The plan might be adopted, which has proved so successful m Canterbury and perhaps moreso m the Wairarapa, namely, of giving private prizes. There are many who would be willing and perhaps better able ! to give a prize of some description | who would not be able to afford the actual cash, and .an energetic canvass might result m ..a Jarge number of prizes being \pjirtiMried. There is no doubt that a great deal of good would result from the formation of such a society, and as -it. is apparent one_will be formed sooner or later j there can be no reasonable excuse i»why a beginning , should' not be .made m this direction at once. ; Whatever plan may be adopted' to r inaugurate a show' this year the one thing necessary to carry it to a successful issue on the part of its promoters is energy. -
