Green Above the Red.
A jovial-looking Irishman named Patrick Mullen, who had celebrated St. Patrick's Day m advance of the parade, was arraigned before Justice Patterson at the Essex Market Police Court Monday. " Ah, good morning, yer warship, " said the prisoner, who wore a red tie, " shure you ain't going to be hard on an Irishman to-day ? " " What, you an Irishman ? " said the court m a tone of surprise. "If what yoh say is true, then you have deserted your country for the British. This is the first time that I ever saw an Irishman with the red on top. " ■■»-'- --" And shure your wurship is mistaken, " exclaimed the prisoner, " I have green above the red." " Where ? I don't see it. " "Why, look at me face, isn't that green enough for you ?" " I beg your pardon, " said the court, "you are discharged." — New York World.
