Notes from Woodville.

[ (Examiner) \ As evidence of ths agricultural progress the Woodville district is making, the plough ia now occasionally seen at work where but a few years ago stood an impenetrable bush. Mr Murray is also about to start the plough, and will this season break up his front paddock on Pinfold Road. The punt over the Upper Ferry is again m working older, and the coach came right through last night. A second slip, on the Gorge road has impeded traffic, and the Government arc ''pottering" away at it with two or three men Better that they put on 20 if necessary, and have the road opened for traffic. As showing the iniquitous tax paid, on the Gorge road m the shape of tolls Mr Hobson, who brought through about 400 head of cattle from the West Coast last week paid £20 m expenses between the Lower Ferry and Woodville. Messrs Smith and Macarthur, M.H:R.'s, have interviewed the Minister for Public Works regarding the bridge over the Lower Ferry. The Minister replied that he recognised the importance of the work, but would make full enquiry before giving a reply. Mr W. Bovvron preached on Sunday m the Free Methodist Church morning and evening. The congregations were large, especially m the eveuing. The subject m the morning was "The grass withoreth," and m the evening "The rich man and Lazarus." Mr Bowron is a very popular preacher, and seems to, have full command of his audience, being able to make them laugh or weep at pleasure. ; A good deal of interest is taken, m the opening up of the new block of Crown land beyond Danevirke. It is likely to be m good demand, and when settled will be of material importance to the Danevirke township. • When the railway line is open to Woodville, our small farmers should do a. splendid trade with Napier m the way of dairy produce. It is only about a month ago since butter for instance, was there bringing 2s a pound. In many parts of the colony dairy farmers are at certain seasons glad to get 6d a pound for this same commodity. The contractor for the Jaying of the permanent way on the Taboraite section is pushing on rapidly with the work,, and has now passed through Danevirke with the rails. Ballasting is to be pushed on : immediately aad the line will probably be ready for opening m two or three months' time. The Tahoraite station presents the appearance of a small township with its numerous buildings, railway sidings, and cattle yards. Mr Bowron has been on a yißit to the district m connection with the cheese factory. The Company have resolved on immediately ordering the boiler, en-, gine, vats, &c", necessary for starting operations. Mr Bowron has a high opinion of the basis on* which the factory is to be worked, and considers it is m a more substantial position than any factory m the colony. The milk supply is running up fast, another settler having on Friday promised 60 gallons.
