The Australian cricketers have commenced a match against a North of England eleven at Nottingham. There was a good attendance of spectators, although heavy rain fell during the day, and, owing to the recent wet weather, the wicket was somewhat heavy. The Home team went m first, and were all disposed of for 91. When the stumps weredrawn for the day the Australians had lost eight wickets for 95. Mr Allnutt, artist, residing m Palmerston, inserts a notice m this issue that he is prepared to give series of lessons m the art of criptoleun oil painting. Mr Allnutt has shown us a sample of his work and we can confidently recommend him as being a master of exceptional ability m this particular line of art. The Awahuri ploughing match will take place on Wednesday next m Mr P. Stewart's paddock; £40 will be given away m prizes which should attract a Urgei number of competitors. Tue Feilding brass band will be m attendance. : Mr Wordsworth and family started ye terday afternoon en route for Wellington, but had to return from Jackeytown, the road beyond being impracticable through the floods on the line. 1 Lady Whitaker, Sir F. Whitaker's Wife, died on Tuesday night at Auckland. f The railway service has been considerably disarranged though the floods. The last train from Wanganui did not pass through Palmerston till ueatly midnight last night, and the first train from Wa»nganui this afternoon passed through at 2.30 instead of 12.35. We are sorry to learn that a number of carcases of stock were seen floating down the river yesterday, also large quantities of timber, fencing, &c. ; Mr E J. Armstrong informs us that the Awahuri bridge with approaches is perfectly safe. A bridge between Awanuri and Feilding is however down. Messrs Foley & Berkley open m the Foresters' Hall on Saturday evening m their original entertainment entitled "Chic." The Press of most of the leading towns where this performance has been produced speak m .favourable terms of the entertainment. Whilst a disolving view entertainment was m progress at Nelson last night the gas bags "burst, blowing out fourteen windows but fortunately injuring no one.
