LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The School Committee will meet this evening m the school, at 7.30 p.m. The Havvera - Manutahi railway is being pushed on vigorously, and it is expected will be open for traffic before next winter. In 1883 the Wesleyan body acquired an allotment m the now heart of Melbourne for £36. The other day they disposed of it to the Bank of Australasia for £36,000. The Wanganui Dairy Factory is a brick building, cost £1.500, aud is conducted on paying principles. Milk is being supplied from 130 cows, the average daily supply being 206 gallons. It is calculated that each gallon of milk yields lllbs of cheese. Suffice it to say here, says an exchange that any so-called educational system which simply informs or trains the intellect, while the moral and spiritual part of man's complex nature is left to take care of itself, can only produce clever devils. A Wellington correspondent says : — " I am told that Sir James Prendergast's return to New Zealand is problematical m the extreme, suffering severely as he is from .brain disease." The late Thomas Holloway was 84 years of age at the time of his death. He left a fortune of £5,000,000 most of which was bequeathed to charitable institutions. Sometimes juries do the most inconceivably silly things. A man was killed by falling down a railway embankment atFoxtou, and though Dr Rockstrow gave evidence that he found the man's neck dislocated, (surely sufficient to account for death taking place,) yet the highly intelligent jury must needs have another doctor from Palmerßton, who, of course told them the same as Dr Rockstrow did But it is not every day they have an inquest m Foxton, and the jurymen doubtless feel the serious responsibility they incur and act accordingly. Mr Ormond presented a petition to Parliament from 64 Napier ladies, praying that the House would pass into law a Local Option Extension Act, that shall embody the power to vote by all women of the colony of mature age. In Utah no woman can be her husband's "better half." She is m big luck if she can 1 boast of being his better sixteenth. The Taranaki Herald reports that Mr Rhind has completed another section of the breakwater which makes the total length of the pier 1166 feet. A medical gentleman, Dr. Howard, who brings with him the very highest testimonials, has at last decided 1 on settling m Woodville for a time, and giving the place a fair trial. It is probable that the Woodville Dairy Factory will even yet be an accomplished fact. We learn from the Examiner there is a strong desire on the part of the shareholders of the Dairy Factory Company that a public meeting should be called to consider the situation. An interesting debate was to be held m the Woodville School-room last evening on " Spiritualism." Mr Dinsdale was to take the affirmative side of the question and Professor Hugo the negative. The debate was to extend over two hours. The following marriage notice appears m a Southern paper : — Capstick — M'lntosh.-rOn the sth . February, at Oamaru, by Rev. Mr Foster, Richard Capstick, of Waimate, to Isabella M'lntosh, of Oamaru. . No cards,no cake, no fuss. '' Quite a fillip to business was given m Dunedin by the baby show. Every fond mother made strong endeavours to dress her baby m a manner equal to the occasion ; and the investments m new capes, hoods, and robes, to say nothing of shoes and slippers, must have been very numerous. There weie no less than 140 babies entered for show.
The direct steamer lonic will leave Wellington for London on Saturday 6th September. The creditors m W. Waring Taylor's estate, are likely to deal very gently wth the debtor out of consideration for ' his connections. The Bank of Australasia has purchased a corner section at Woodville for £750. The steamer Wakatipu, which left Wellington for Sydney last week, had on board 60 horses and one prize cow from the South. A man named John Smith was seatenced to a month's imprisonment m Auckland this week, for fraudulently obtaining a dinner. The man went to Dr Tenuant with a pitiable tale, and begged a shilling, the Dr gave him an order on a restaurant keeper, and he took ft mate J with him, having altered the word " dinner " into " dinners " and thus obtained a feed for his mate. The Auckland Herald of a recent date has the following : — " At the Police Court, on Saturday, the charge against CharJes Walter Langstone, for deserting his wife and family at Bulls, Wellington, some months ago, was heard. Mr T. Cotter, who appeared for the defendant, admitted the facts, but said he had left his wife through her bad temper, and had on several occasions forwarded her money. Ho said Langstone was quite willing to have an order made for the payment of £2 per week. SergeantGamble agreed to this on the wife being communicated with, and her consent ob•tained. The case was adjourned to Satnrday next, and defendant's bail was enlarged." The Napier Telegraph hears from Taupo that Mr Jack Loffley, the wellknown guide and bath proprietor at Tapuaeharuru, was brutally assaulted by four men on Tuesday night. The outrage was committed close to the hotel there. Loffley was knocked down, dragged along the road, and kicked about the head and body. The following morning he was enabled to proceed by the coach to Taupo, where he received medical attention. Loffley is by no means a young man, and can ill stand such treatment, but a few years ago it would have takeu all that four men could do to have used him iv the manner described. It is to be hoped the ruffians will be discovered.
