Settlement m New Zealand.
Late English papers say that the attention of capitalists and intending emigrants has latterly been directed very much towards New Zealand, and especially towards the North Island. With ihe object of purchasing, improving, and colonising land m that part of the Queen's dominions, a new company, styled the Auckland and Hawke'B Bay Land Company, is now being formed m London, with a capital of £100,000 m £1 shares. Only £60,000 is at present asked for. It may be argued that very little can be done with such a small amount as this, but it is the object of the directors — amongst whom are Sir William Smith, Mr Robert Angus, Mr Thomas Gordon, Mr John Y. Rees, Mr D. D. Wernyss, and Mr Frank H. Wilson — to proceed very cautiously to work. Definite offers of two blocks of land, comprising 50,000 acres, have been submitted to them, for which negotiations are now going on, which, it is expected, will result m an immediate settlement being effected on most favourable terms. The proposal is to lay out the land m convenient townships, and m suburban, and rural sections. The sections will he partially cleared and fenced, and on those of 400 acres good four-room frame houses, costing about ,£l5O, will be erected. On the half sections of 200 acres smaller houses, costing about £100, will bo built, and. the farms will be sold to settlers on deferred payments extending over seveial years,'
