(united press association.) ■■ . GISBORNE, August 19. Gisborne was lit with gas last night for the'first time. The directors entertained abeut forty gentlemen, representing the professional, mercantile, the Civil Service, and the local bodies. The quality of gas appears to be very good. The capital of the company is ten thousand pounds. The Auckland Gas Company commenced with thirteen shareholders, and the capital is now £150,000. Great confidence was expressed by all the speakers as to the future prosperity of the town and country. Auckland, August 19. ' 196 competitors have entered for the district scholarship examination. J. 0. Williamson, of opera company celebrity , ; is a passenger by the s.s. Zealandia for San Francisco, which left here this evening. ; Michael Haydon, who attempted to poison himself with " Rough on Rats " poison, is recovering. Christchurch, August 19. Mr Thos. Bracken, while en route for Wellington, accepted nn offer to make a tour of the West Coast for the purpose of writing a series of articles descriptive of the scenery of the part of that colony. He had started overland for Hokitika, and will visit the principal places of interest on the coast before settling down m Wellington. Invbrcabqill, August 19.
