A man (name unknown) has committed suicide at Mongonui Bluff hotel, between Dargaville and Hokianga. Hugh Blank Scott, engraver, oharged with wife desertion at Timaru, has been remanded by the Auckland Bench to Timaru, bail being allowed. The Waihora will be admitted to partique on Monday, and leave for Melbourne direct on Tuesday. The passengers have presented a complimentary address to Captain Edie. Ohristchurch, August 16. R. Duncan, blacksmith, of Papanui, when cutting the branch of a tree, fell about 28it. His spine was injured, and he is m a critical state. At the City Hotel last night, a presentation was made to the Canterbury members of the football team that recently visited New South "Wales. Early on Saturday morning the driver of the Normanby tramcar was knocked down and seriously injured by a boy on horseback named Bethune. The accident occurred at the Nonnanby terminus. The driver named Greaburg had jumped off the car and was running 4 smartly to the other end just as the lad oa horseback was coming by m the opposite direction. The man was knocked down by the lad's horse, and had to be cariied into Walker's hotel, being quite insensible Dr Coughtrey was sent for, but before he arrived the man bad recovered consciousness. The doctor ordered the patient to be removed to the hospital, where he is ituproving rapidly. "Waieawa, August 18. A burglarious attempt to break into the bank of New Zealand at Waipukurau was made at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. They broke through the windows and door, but were then alarmed by the agent waking and escaped. There is no trace of the burglars.
