Dairy Factories.
At a meeting of those m favour of establishing a Butter, Cheese, and Bacon Factory m Cambridge, Waikato. Captain Runciman expressed himself as m favor of a Cheese and Bacon Factory being established m the district, as ie was almost certain to be a success, and shareholders as well as farmer* would benefit thereby, which meant the indirect benefit, to a certain extent of all m the town and district. Cheese made by the factory process had been proved to be superior to that manufactured by private individuals, and it paid farmers better to dispose of their milk to the factories wholesale than to make cheese themselves. As evidence that there was every probability that the industry would prove a success, he could not do better, than refer them to the annual report of the factory at Hamilton. True, there had been a deficiency of £82, but that should not discourage them. Had they, like the other factories m the district, only paid 3£d per gallon for their milk instead of 4d as they had done, m place of a deficiency, the company would have been able to declare a diviend to its shareholders of 10 per cent. But forthe future the factory would be able to continue to pay Id per gallon for milk and declare a handsome dividend to the shareholders as well, as the working and other expenses of any industry of this kind for the first year was always much more than the second year. In the report was given a tabulated statement of the amount which those farmers who had been supplying the faotory with milk had made from the'r cows during the seasou. From this it was shown that the milk of each cow of the various settlers had realised between £7 and £8, a result which they all must admit was very satisfactory, as he had no hesitation m saying that by no other means could farmers get such a large yield per head from a large number of cows. During the season the factory had purchased 101,131 and three-tenths gallons of milk, which at 4d amounted to £1686, producing cheese to the amount of £1833 18s sd.
