The Foxton Tramway.
The locomotive was tried yesterday, and did the nine miles m half an hour. The line was being examined to-day by Mr Rotheram as to its suitability for the Government trucks. The line is from Carnarvon: junction to Hickford's corner, about four miles from Sandoji,i.;ltvwill;be open for trariic next week. This will be an additional outlet for timber, as well" as produce exporting"area; m dii*eet rail cornmnnication with Palmerston. The outward 'Frisco mail will close this evening. The StandaßD extra issued last evening, giving the result of the great cricket, match, caused considerable excitement. It was almost a foregone conclusion that the- magnificent score of the Australian Eleven would not be surpassed. Such a record is something for colonists to feel proud of. To-morrpw will be issued a fourteen column supplement with the Standabd seven columns of advertisements, and seven of speoially selected and very entertaining reading matter. In the whale found on the Rangitikei beach by Mr Arthur Amon, was found a harpoon bent m all shapes, also a bullet, so that the whale had been m the wars. The defunct monster;of the deep was minus black whalebone, usually found m the mouth and also teeth. It required the strength of three men with Jevers *Q lift one of the jaw bones on a , (fray. It measured 1§ feet m length, The oil nas turned out a very good samplet We learn that Mr Wordsworth is shortly about leaving Palmerston, and has some thoughts of removing to Australia. He is much taken with the idea of going to Silverton. We wish him guccess wherever he may settle. Hanlan and Beach are both m fine form for their approaching aquatic contest. The betting is now two to one against Beach. An accident occurred on the Hutt railway yesterday. The train ran off the rails about 300 yards from the Hutt Bailwav Bail way Station, the engine dragging off eight trucks, which were behind it. None of the passenger cars were injured, though the passengers were a good deal shaken. The Wanganui Herald has been handed 'a small pamphlet written by the Rev; A« Towgood, of St. Stephen^ Churchy Morton;, entitled "A letter on ihe forthcoming mission to the parishlonorsof St. Stephen's, Marton." T-he writer gives m this a resume of the reasons which have led him to invite the Rev. H. E. Coppinger, of Palmerston, to hold a Iweek's mission at Marton. The objeVits of the mission are clearly set forth, and hints given for the successful carrying out of these objects.
Mr Snelson's sales for to-morrow are elsewhere announced. The steamer Wairarapa arrived at Melbourne from the Bluff yesterday. The great cricket match was drawn m consequence of want of time for its Completion.^ A very beautiful silver communion service is on view m Messrs McDowell Bros., windows, having been ordered from Mr Hislop, silversmith, Wellington, for tho Presbyterian body. Tho service consists of five pieces : 1 flagon, 2 cups, and 2 platters. The vessels are plain but of good material manufactured by Reed and Barton, Sheffield. Mr D. M. George leaves for Melbourne the beginning of next month principally to purchase for the spring and summer season, and partly also on account of hia health. At the meeting of the Dairy Factory Company, Mr Caverhill as local agent for the Few Zealand Loan and Mercantile; Agency Company said the Dairy Company- would not be bound to send all their butter through the Loan and Mercantile. : In the departure of Mr Seeker from Palmerston the Palmerston Football Club lose one of their best forwards, Mr Perkins, for whom Mr Seeker acted as accountant, spoke highly of his business energy and ability. His many friends will at all times bo glad to hear of his prosperity. A Wellington bank has been served with a writ claiming £3,000 damages, for alleged injury to financial credit by a resident commercial man; We learn from a settler on the Foston Line that the feed m that district is quite two months m advance of this time last year. --•■•• We hear that several of Signor Hug's patients have expressed themselves materially benefited by the treatment recommended by^ira while ma clairvoyant state. The Imperial Parliament was formally prorogued yesterday by .commission. There was an error m our report m yesterday's issue of Messrs Stevens and Gorton's Palmerston stock sale, which we hasten to correct. Three and four year-old steers realized £4 10s to £5 2s 6d ; yearling steers 30s. The spiritualistic gatherings on Sunday evenings are now so numerously attended, that it is anticipated it will soon be necessary to hold them m a larger building or erect an edifice for the purpose. By cable to-day we learn that Earl Lauderdale, who was struck by lightning m Scotland, died next day from the injuries received. His Lordship was aged 62. The adjourned meeting of the Directors of the Dairy Factory is being held as we go to press.
