The/reported death of Osman Digna, the rebel Arab chief, has been officially denied. The homeward Suez June mails were delivered m London on Tuesday. The Hinffaroomji' sailed from Melbourne for Bluff on "Tuesday. The ship Wellington from Lyttelton with a cargo of frozen mutton has arrived at Home. The Imperial Federation Conference is now holding its sittings, and considerable interest is being taken m the probable results of its proceedings. The interior of Mr Snelson's Auction Mart is at present undergoing considerable alterations which will when completed materially add to the accommodation and comfort of settlers on salo days. Latterly, many attending Mr Snelson's sales have been compelled to remain on the footpath until a chance offered to get inside, but m future ranch greater convenience will be afforded them,

Benson, wellknown m connection with the old Panama Steam Service, died on July 22 after a fhort illness. , A Wangauui firm of butchers have now opened a wholesale and retail branch m Wangauui, which they supply m earby steamer from Wanganui. Mr Bryce has definitely decided to prosecute Mr Rnsden for slander. A considerable delay is likely, to take place before the case comes off. On her last trip from Wellington to Wauganui, the Stormbird passed a large piece of wreckage about 20 miles north of Knpiti, apparently the bow and side of a large schooner painted black. By telegram to-day fromSignor Hug we learnt that he missed. the train yesterday; whether he will come to-night or not we cannot say, as no further notification of his movements has reached us. From the Chronicle we learn that the train, due m Wauganui at 10.5 last evening, did not arrive till 12.43 a.m. The delay was due to the breaking of one of the connecting rods of the eugine near Greatford". Consequently the gear on one side of the engine had to bo disconnected, and the traiu brought to town with only side working. . It is extraordinary how often mishaps of this kind occur m th« vicinity of Greatford. | A young man who was charged with larceny at the Wellington Magistrate's Court this morning owes his apprehension says the, Post to his proficiency as a billiard player. The description given of the accused m the Police' Gazette showed that one of his occupations was that of a billiard-marker, and on the arresting constable entering a saloon at Otaki, kept by a Chinaman, his attention was directed to the prisoner ou account of the remarkable proficiency which he was displaying m the game known as ".deviPsp ool." The thought struck the officer that the accused was the man "wanted" by the Wellington police, and, after glancing at the Gazette again, he took him into custody.
