The Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1884. THE MANAWATU ELECTION.
Our anticipations wit^h regard to this contest hav,e been verified m, the return ;of Mr Macarthur by a very large majority. We congratulate hini and the district at large on the result. We are satisfied Mr i Macarjthur will make an excellent member, and that m his hands the requirements of the district will be efficiently and impartially' looked after, i We will go a little further still, and will venture to predict that within a year from now the majority of those who opposed Mr MacarthurV candidature will admit that the district made a wise and discreet: choice m electing him. We, look npon him as one who will make his mark m the. House, and who, we venture , to ' say, ' Will m course of time occupy a seat on the Ministerial Benches. We are assured that the most ample jpstjce will be donejby our -new member to" I*aimerst6h. This district will soon experience the, benefit of having a local reprepresentative, which to Manawatu wjll be a new sensation. To the defeated, candidate, Mr Donald Fraskr,. jwe offer, our . sympathy. We cannot reproach ourselves with having written a harsh- or unjust word of him or his candidature during the j contest. HeVill now admit that; his coming forward was a mistake,; so far as he himself was concerned. The contest neverthless served several good purposes, which' are too obvious to require explanation. He fought . Jiis battle to the. end, and was m fan {jght; He retires with^the gtfod wishes of a large number -people, who have admired | his pluck, determination, and undoubted, honesty of purpose. The contest now being over, we trust] all .'Undue political excitement and party feeling will' be.- permitted fp subside, and tjjat the electors will forget ajiy hearfpu'rniijgs, whioH it may have called infd existence; • On tfje/7tb j)f August Mr Macarthur will commence his Parliamentary duties, and we are move than satisfied that his jbitterest pnemtes WJ}l admjf before th!e session is oycr that tlje new member |for Manawatu js one wht> wijl do the district every credit, and by whofft its interests will be adynace4 jtp jthe ufmpsj. of his ftbility, eyery portion yeceiyjng tjje mo§p irppartail treat|tierit at hi§ hands. Yesterday should inaugurate a new p^der of things for Manawatu, m her frppinjg herself frpm the Johnston regime, and m the election of a resident representative at last.
