In reply to a return a3ked for at last meeting the following information re undermentioned works was given : — College Street West:— Cost of 19 chains of drain : for labour L 26 16s. Average cost L 2 83 per chain. NORTH-STREET. 23 chains of gravel, 8 feet m width, 6 inches m thickness. Cost of labour, L 25 3s 6d. Average cost of gravel, 2s 2£d per yard. CEMETERY ROAD. Cost of labour, LlB 9s; average cost, Is 9d per yard. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Walter Johnston, re exchange of sections, to enable Broadstreet and George-street to be connected. Application had been made to realize on two sections elsewhere to raise money wherewith to purchase intervening section by means of the Public Works Act. It was noir .sought to give the Council the necessary powers to act m the manner suggested. Mr Johnston said the matter should be referred to the next member for Manawatu, by whom it could l>e represented m the House when Parliament again meu Letter read from Mr Milvorton, drawing attention to present condition of Main-street. Matter deferred until after notice of motion, re re-appointment of Com* mittees, had- been dealt withj From the Masterton Borough Council, asking for certain information re Fire Brigade and street lamps. Letter referred to Fire Brigade to send replies, and information re street lamps to be furnished by the Town Clerk. RELIC OF OLD DATS. Cr Abrahams drew attention to the dangerous state of the old building near the Union Bank, which he suggested should be removed at once, as being an eyesore to the neighbor' hood. ' ' : ' Resolved— That the Government be requested to gazette the piece of land on which the trig; statijn stands as a public street. REQUEST FOR A FENCE. Cr Gatton requested permission on behalf of Mr Parkes to erect a rough fence to prevent his cattle straying through the bush. The Town Clerk said that the permission had been already granted by the late Council. Resolved that the petition be granted. ' APPLICATION DEFERRED. Matter re piece of work tor which Mr Carroll offered to advance the cost, to be referred to Public Works Committee when formed. Cr Abrahams referred to We nuisance of horses and carts being fastened to the Square fence. The matter to be notified to the Rangiu*. RE-APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Cr Hawkins moved the motion standing m his name, viz: — That committees be reformed as followi viz : — Public Works Committee — Cm Henderson, Larcomb, Stratford, and Sutton. Finance Committee— Cr» D. M. George, S. Abrahams, T. Manson, and the mover. Reserves Committee— Ci-s Wood, Gatton, Wray, and West j two to form a quorum, the Mayor ex officio acting on each committee. Cr Abrahams seconded. Cr West opposed the motion. Cr Abrahams supported the motion. Motion put and carried, Cr West dissenting. THE GRAVEL QUESTION. . The Maiyor stated that the gravel supply was diminishing, and the Foreman of Works" had asked for an expres^ou of opinion from the Council as to the advisability of permitting gravel to be taken, for private purposes and under what regulations. Referred, to the Public Works Committee. The Counoilthen adjourned till the lirst Wednesday m August.
