A Forest on Fire.
The Sail Francisco cor^eapond'eht of the : Auckland Herald unites to that paper :— We have despatches .stating that a^greaij.and fearful fire has been rasing fox a week m the pine forests m Norm Carolina, haviug originated m brush firefc Hie • wind rose suddenly to a hurricane, and the flames leapt among the turpentine orchards, going on for miles and miles m an incredibly short space of time. The wind was ho i high for many hours that half trees were borne all aflame through: the air, landing afi long distances, and so keeping up. the terrible conflagration. The description of the scene as telegraphed battles description, I should suppose the fire exteuds for miles along each .side of the railway, and lights up the whole country m a tetrible, yet magnificent manner. Fifty or sixty turpentine distilleries have been, destroyed, and it still burns. ■ Sixty miles of burning pine must lie a glorious, if »n awfuj sight. The fires ha vfe • swept away barns, mills, houses, and • fencing. Orchards of turpentine containing 100.0 and upwards of trees have been destroyed. Hundreds of people are homeless, and the calamity is one of the most distressing we hay» heard of for a long time. .
