(UNITED PKESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, June 30. Mr Douald, one of the earliest settlers, and for many years Resident Magistrate and Coroner for Lyttelton, died last night aged 68 years. Mark H. Thompkins, owner of the Royal Hotel, Woodend, which was refused a renewal of license, was to-day-brought up before tho magistrates at Kaiapoi, charged with threatening and abusive language to the Rev. L. Hudson. He admitted the charge, but pleaded m justification that complaiuant had given evidence against the Royal at the Licensing Court. He was fined £3 and costs £2 10s, with the alternative of a month's itnprisonmont, and ordered to find two sureties of £25 each, and self m £50. The Acclimatisation Society are stnding 10,000 brown trout ova to the Wairarapa Society m exchange for ova of Loch Leven and salmon trout.

At the inquest oh Ellen Adams, billed" on the railway line, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, adding a rider that the line should be made more secure, as there are several places where persons can stray on the line from the streets.

The Dunedin South Licensing Bench to-day refused to reconsider their decision to refuse a license to the Royal Hotel. The owner intends to sue the committee for damages for deteroriating the property. „

Atjckxand, June 30. William Cogan, for attempted suicide by cutting his throat, was committed for trial. George W. Hantley, for the same offence, by cutting an artery m his fore-arm, was discharged. Michael Kirby was committed for attempted incendiarism. The Auckland footballers on their re-! turn received an enthusiastic reception at the hand* of the Rugby Union. They were taken to the Star Hotel m a drag, and toasts were drank. The Mayor presided, and' welcomed them.

Gueymoutf, June 80. About 250 names were called on at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning to show why they should appear on the electoral roll Thorewas no appearance of those called, and all were struck off except one, who was not absent six months from the district, which the Magistrate held was necessary before being struck off, otherwise voters might become disfranchised by Short and temporary absence.

Nelson, July 1. George Franklyn was charged at tha Police Court this morning with unlaw. fully wounding one William Maher wiik an axe, with intent to commit murder, but was remanded, and bail was refused. The injured man appears slightly better this morning, but he can scarcely recover.
