The trees to which^the roots belong stand 50 feet from the - Two shoots .pierced, tbrojigh^^liet ..brie 1 ?: wall of tbe well, andsenaing o'ffjniilions of fibres, fo'rnied a densejnat that completely covered IK|'Bd^m of |fiewell. Most of these fibres are no larger than threads, and are so ' wdven and intertwis,t^d|iß .t%foEm a mat as impenetrable^ and strong- as thongb! woren m a JLoom. The mat when first taken out of the w,ell wa§ water soaked anjl covered with, mud, and nearly all ft man squ^ lift,! !b;ufc;;when dry, ir was. nearly as softf & ijtouch as wool, and weighed only a few-ounces. This is an exce]lentiillustr>;tion of the way m which the enciilyptus absorbs moisture its roots going so far to find water, pdshi^giithe&isel^es^ through: a brick jwjall, and then .dewloping enormously Safter the water is— reaohed. It is thought; ithfesj<ine of> the causes of the drying up_of swells is the insatiable thirst of these^vegetable monsters.
