News m a Nutshell.
Some fine samples of local-grown tobacco have been shown m Tauranga. It is said that Sir George Grey has expressed his intention of not again accepting office. Numerous rifle clubs are being formed throughout Victoria, the Government lending the members rifles. A correspondent m the Melbourne Age suggests that every colonist should have a rifle and know how to use it. We find m the column of the Agetho startling assertion that " Melbourne is at the present time m the hands of a gang of expert burglars." " Dr." War-stall, recently charged at the Auckland Police Court with drunkenness; claims to be a nephew of Sir Harry S. Parkes, British Minister at Pekin. If Te Whooro, the present member for the western Maori district, does not return m time for election, Te Whiti or or Major I£einp will be his probable successor. Nothing is so wholesome, nothing does so much for people's looks, as a little interchange of the small coin of benevolence and good feeling. A great deal depends upon a man's courage when he is alandered and traduced. Weak men are crushed by detraction, but the bravo hold on and .succeed.
