The service m the Gospel Hall, Mainstreet, last evening was numerously attended. Mr James Linton may bs axpected m Palmerston from his Australian tour during the present week. A lost overcoat advertised m the Standard last week was restored to its owner a day or two aftfir. Mr E. V. Dixon's application for a new house at Tuhoraite was refused by the Woodvilld Licensing Bench. There will be a meeting of the Oliro Branch Royal Black Preceptory, Nu. 462, m the Foresters' Hall, this evening at 7 o'clock. Mr Burr addressed a meeting en Friday m the Public Hall, his remarks, delivery, and pronunciation causing much amusement. He undertook to turn out the Government, and to revolutionize all things political, if he got into the House. The audience applauded vigorously, and nppeared to immensely eiij< y the joke of Mr Burr's candidature. Tlio speaker gave hip opinions on all subjects under the sun from Federation down to the Beer Tax. By-and-bye hi 3 hearers became rather impatient,- so the chairman wfiß woke up, and the proceedings terminated m the usnal manner. The regular meeting of Manawatu Kihvinning Lodge S.C. No. 690 will be held m the Masonic Hall, Main-street, on Wednesday next, at 7.30 p.m. By advertisement elsewhere the Mayor convenes a Public Meeting of settlers to be held m the Town Hall, Palmerston North, on Thutsdny, June 12th, at 7.30 p.m., to consider certain propositions for the better disposal by the Oow.i of bush lands, and other matters of public interest. We remind our readers that a public meeting will be held m the Wesleyan Church this evening at half pact seven o'clock when the Revs. R. S. Bunn, J. H. Simmonds, of Sandon, and other ministers and friends will give addresses. There will be collections m aid of the Trust Fund. It was notified after yesterday's evening service that it was hoped as many as possible would put themselves to some little inconvenience m order to be present as a statement would be read showing the financial position of the church. At Mr Snelson'B stock sale on Saturday the attendance was very thin and the bidding very dull. The following are the prices realized : — Yearlings, 25s to 30s; heifeis, 375; cows, £2 12s 6d to £4 5s ; beef, £6 ; fat wh ethers, 10s 6d. We understand a display of electric light will take place m Palmerslon m the course of a week or bo. Notice of place and date will duly appear. Woodville is fortunate m getting Dr Atterbury as its medical man. He is also fortunate m dropping into such a promising district. Mr Patterson's funeral took place yesterday m Wanganui, a good many being present from this district, including Mr H. McNeil and others. Mr Campbell, the new master of the Woodville School, will to-day take charge of the School. A lad employed at the Terrace End Hotel sustained a fracture of his leg by being tramped on by a horse from which he had fallen. DrMacintire was soon m attendance and set the broken bone. Mr Scott has made arrangements to lease the piano m the Foresters' Hall, and made a start with his pupils to-day. A general meeting of subscribers to the Palmerston North "Winter Race Meeting is convened for Friday next. The Rev. Mr Bunn preached special sermons at the Wesleyan Church yesterday morning and evening, and also addressed child rens' service m the afternoon. The sermon preached m the evening was especially appropriate to the occasion. A contemporary has been shown a Southampton paper, m which are advertisements offering ". the best quality of this excellent New Zealand mutton," which shows that this is making its way m England. The prices quoted are : legs, 9d ; shoulders, 9d ; loins, 7£d ; necks, 7d ; breasts, 6d per pound. The Marton paper learns that Mr Fry has consented to be nominated for the vacancy on the Education Board. The Wanganui Dairy Factory will be closed for the winter months on Wednesday next. A fresh start will be made on September Ist. The Wanganui Chronicle, was shown on Saturday a sample of gold-bearing stone said to have been brought down the river by a native ; and from inquiries made it believes the information to bo reliable. There were eight pieces m all, and m each piece gold was plainly to be seen. The Supreme Court sittings at Napier begin to-day, before Mr Justice Gillies. There is a heavy calendar, including the charge of murder against Edwards. Among the contributions recently found m the plate at St. John's Church, Feilding, were found a inarhle and a button. These were given (says the Star) m perfect good faith by two lads, who gave what was of value to them at least, if not to the church. How does our contemporary speak so positively ? Mr Francis Arkwright, will address the electors of RangitiVei at the Forester's Hall, Marton, on the 12lh inst. Mr Arkwright, thongh said to have been an English M. The Marton paper considers this promotion. Surely; Marton must be going back. Mr McEl wain showed us on Saturday some very creditably executed photographs of views m the Manawatu Gorge, and a really excellent picture of the Gorge Bridge. The pictures arc really works of art, and as local productions nre worthy of honourable mention. We believe it is Mr MeKl wain's intention to frame them, and to scud them to the Exhibition of Art shortly to be held m Auckland.
