Important to Sheep Farmers.
THREATENED RISING OP THE STOCKHOLDERS IN THE WAIRARAPA. [Herald Correspondent.] Masterton, June 3. Much alarm prevails here amongst many sheep owners through the apparent determination of Sheep Inspectors to look up the East Coast and principal pastoral lands of Wsiirarapal'roin communication with Wellington and Masterton markets. Owing to the nature oi the Act, sxnd the detective zeal of the officers of the department, owners are afraid to travel with clean stock. Several have lately been fined veiy heavily m consequence of the difficulties m obtaining permits. Yesterday Meredith, of Riversdale, was fined fifty pounds by the R.M., Wurdell for travelling clean sheep, that had been previously dipped, to Masierton without a permit. It is proposed to hold an indignation meeting, as a belief prevails that a few influential stockholders are working the department ho as to monopolize to themselves the principal markets and seaboard, and, by preventing the competition, raise the value of their stock. Tho fines inflicted for laches arising from an imperfect knowledge of the penal clause of te Act arhe considered outrageous.
