WIFE BEATING.
On the subject of wife beating and its penalty m New South Wales, the Sydney Morning Herald says : — Thomvs* Banner, convicted of assault and occasioning actual bodily harm to his wife, was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour forjthree years, and ordered to be kept tor the first six mouths of that time m irons. The power of judges m wife beating cases have beeu largely ■ increased under Ihe iirw criminal law of New South Wales. In addition to sentencing offenders to imprisonment, and ordering them to be kept m irons, the court can impose solitary confinement and whipping ; and, further, if m the opinion of the jud^e the f.iture safety of vhe wife is m peril, h«? may add to the sentence a declaration that she shall no longer cohabit with hor husband, which declaration will have ihe effect of a decree of judical separation on the ground of cruelty. This is a great improvement on the old system, where a husband was allowed to give his wife " moderate castigation" with impunity. Wife beaters are amongst the worst law breakers, and are bad citizens, and their punishment should be no less than that meted out m criminal assault.
