Heavy rain amounting to over four inches has fallen over a large parl of the colony since Friday night. Melbourne, May 26. Arrived, this evening — P. and O. steamship Carthage with inward Brindisi mails, dated London April 18th. The run on the Chartered Bank of Australia to-day was chiefly confined to notes and the total withdrawals has been slight. It is believed that the rumors regarding the stability of the Bank were circulated with a malicious intent.
