Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. MONDAY, MAY 26, 1884. A TIMELY SUGGESTION.
A scientific writer commenting on Mr Gladstone's advice to British farmers to grow more fruit, says :-?- --" I would point out that the mere planting orclmi-ds is not enough — we must extend bee culture m the same proportion. The blossoms of our orchards are hardly half fertilised as it is, owing to the comparative scarcity of bees. In ancient times, when cane sugar was scarce and dear, people were forced to keep bees for tho .sake of their honey, all kinds of orchard fruit were plentiful enough. The United States arc now the chief suppliers of our foreign apples, and significantly enough, it is from them we also get our imported honey. The association is worthy to bo remembered.
