Palmerston North Winter Race Meeting.

Stevxtrds — Messrs Thos, King, E. Brown, W. T. Wood, A. Bentley, E. Collins, W. G. .Robinson, S. Skernmn. Judge — J. Fen ton Starter — J. C. Nathan Clerk of Scales — R. Leigh Clerk of Course — 3. Lane Uandicapper — A lex. Higgle Timekeeper — H. W. Haybittle Hon. Treasure) — Thos. King

The above races came off on Saturday, hut the weather was not altogether promising for a successful ' meeting, there being every indication of rain and a very cold breexe was blowing all day, but notwithstanding this, vehicles of every description were busily employed conveying people to the course, and there must have been fully 1000 present, all apparently bent on enjoying themselves, and that they did so there can be no question. All the arrangements were complete, and the office-* carers may congratulate themselves on the fact that if there wore any drawbacks it whs no fault of theirs. We have seen better t contested events and consequently more excitement, but we have never soer, a meeting pass off more smoothly than the one held on Saturday. Another thing fot congratulation was the absence of actual drunkenness, with one or two excep • tions, which has been the ruling evil on too many racecourses. There were two or three accidents but not of a serious nature, two jockeys corning ' to grief m the hurdle races and one m a flat race. Mr Nathan, who I officiated as starter, found it necessary j to fine one of the jockeys, W. Arnot, j £5 for disobeying orders. His example I might be followed with advantage on ! nearly every course m the colony, for it is a too frequent occurrence m jockeys trying to get an unfair ; advantage m starting and conse- | quently causing an unnecessary delay. Sir Abraham's new totalisator was well patronised, which would lead one [ to suppose that if hard times are experienced throughout tbe colony, the Manawatu is at least an exception taking 1 into account the number present. The total amount invested was closo on £1000. The first event on the piogramnie [■ "was the I 1. Handicct]) Hurdle Race of 25 I soys.
