The City Council last night agreed to purchase half-a-dozen gaa cooking stoves, with the view of inducing the public to use them for cooking and heating purposes. At the Police Court, to-day, a publican was charged with failing to admit a constable ■without unnecessary delay. Mr Carew dismissed the case, holding that the Act lequires that a constable must, intimate by sufficient words that he demands to enter for the purpose of preventing or detecting a violation of the provisions of the Act.

A very narrow escape from drowning occurred m the roadstead to-day, about noon. Four men, of the barque Auriga, lying m the roadstead, put off from the breakwater, and after going some distance they attempted to hoist a sail, but the halyards gave way. One of the men then climbed the mast, and the boat capsized, consequently rolling over and over several tinn'S. Eventually all four men were picked up by a boat from the schooner Spray, two of the seamen being m a very exhausted condition. All of them now, however are doing well.
