Unfortunate Contretemps.

(united press association.) Inveecargill, May 15. O'Donnell, one of the Southland footballers selected to <»o to Sydney, was arrested m Clinton to-day, and brought back to Invercargill to-night on a fugitive warrant. It appears that he is indebted to several tradespeople m the town, who have taken this step owing to strong suspicion that he did not intend to return. O'Donnell had his wife with him, andjis well-known as an athlete. He was a large winner at the Dunedin amateur sports. Later. O'Donnell, the footballer, slipped through the fingers of his creditors after being brought back. It is staled thab he was arrested by the bailiff of the Resident Magistrate's Court and brought to town yesterday evening. The Resident Magistrate, Mr McCnUock, was m his room about H p.m. when the bailiff brought O'Donnell m, and left him there. None of h'"s creditors were present, and after a short interval 0' Donnell followed the bailiff, anJ regained his liberty. It is stated lhat the Magistrate made no remarks to him. O'Donnell went to the station m. the outskirts of the town this morning, and made a fresh departure for Sydney. There is some talk of issuing another warrant to bring him back. O'Donnell was a teacher m the Roman Catholic school here, and had previously held a similar position m Christchurch, and before that is alleged to have been m the police force. A strong feeling exists that the Rugby Union should take action by way of appointing a substitute for O'Donnell m the Sydney team.
