An Eventful Career.
Tt is -with great regret (writes a correspondent of theWoodville paper) that I record the death of Mr Kollat at the early age of 38 years, which took place at Waipukurau hospital last vreek, a few days aftex his removal from here. Kollat was one of the first settlers m the Puketoi, over three years ago, having come here from Palmerston where he had a small section of land. A German Pole by birth, he had m former years seen much military service having been engaged m the Austro-Prussian campaign '66 (Sadowa), and he was all through the Franco-Prussian war of 70, remaining m the French eoantry m the army of occupation under the celebrated Eed Prince Carl. He possessed the Iron Cross — the German decoration for valour m the field, and he was wont to relate, round the camp fire, many interesting incidents of " che pomp and circumstances of glorious war." Soon after coming to this conntry ho was one of the victims of the notorious Smat, and was the first man Smat struck with the axe m the fearful outrage at Mungaroa. His death has cast quite a gloom over this little community.
