A Wandering Child.

It was reported at the Masterton Police Statiou jate one evening recently that a little girl named 'Elizabeth Scadden was missing from her home. Jt appeared that she went to school m the morning and was guilty of some childish misconduct. Fearing that it might be reported to her parents, it is supposed that she absented herself from her home. Two Constables, her parents, and the master of the school were up half the night looking for the lost child, but could find no trace of her. The following paragraph from a Wellington paper clears up the mystery : — "At about 10 o'clock at night Dr Kemp found a little girl of some eight or nine years of age wandering, appaiently lost, on the Terrace. On being interrogated she gave her name as Elizabeth Scadden, and said that she and her father had recently come from the Hutt. She stated that she had been sent out by her father to buy some bread, and could not Hud her way home ; she did not know where they lived. Dr K«rap took the child to the police statiou m order to see if any inquiries had been made for her, but finding that no one had been asking after her, took her home to his own house for the night. We have ascertained that the girl borrowed two shillings from the wife of a workman m i he town, and with thiß sum travelled down to town by ihe after* noon train from the Ktmipuni flag station." A search party was oub m the bush next morning looking after her, and her parents, m great distress of mind, were also engaged hunting for her till a telegram from Wellington revealed her whereabouts.
