.The Salvation Army would appear to be having a good time at Masterton. Lieut. Knar, m taking; leave of hit) flock, ia report'eo^by a Masterton paper to : hare said that he bad iegistored sixty-three j converts duung his stay ia the town. 1 The frozen meat tr.tde contiuues astonishingly active. A correspondent m ' the Hawkas Bay Herald complains that 20,000 sheep were bought m that dmrict by the Grea'r to'eat Company, and shipped from Wellington instead of Napier. In the year ending 31at March, 1883, the exoorta of frozen meat were valued at £27,762, whilst m the year ended 3lst March, 1884, the amount shipped was wurth £183,223. English advices say that the low prices of meat ruling during the early part of the winter were ca-isett by its mildness, and the consequent abun* dunl supply of Home-grown meat, * Anglo- Australian' m the European Mnil writes ;—' A depot For the sale of New Zealand mutton has been opened m Tbamea-street, Lmdou, and m and about London the retail butchers are at last .beginning to avow that the meat may be worth retailing. Many of those of whom I formerly made inquiries used to assure me that I should find only water for gravy, not knowing, of course, who I wa3 ; and some of them appeared to labor under the absurd idea that the carcasses were soaked m water and tuen frozen hard. Happily, all this nonsense and resultant prejudice is rapidly exploding, and the popularisation of the mutton prooeeds rapidly.'
Bishop and Mrs Hadtield >"ere t<> leave Weliingion on their trip Home by thes.s. Hawea, yesterday. They join the s.s. Ton^ariro at Lvtteiton. It is understood that the harbor works at New Plymouth are now progressing very favorably. The brenkwater has now been runout sn far that steamers like the Wanaka can, m moderately fine weather, lie alongside, and ship cargo and passengers, thus avoiding the necessity of using surf boats... The breakwater ia also of great advantage m shipping cattle. ■ From the paddock* leading on to tho break" wa*er the ca'.Ue are put m closed trucks m pairs, twd then run do wit to the ship's side and hoisted on board. When the Vorks are coaiplered vessels of ordinary size will be enabled to come m and take m cargo at anj time, and it is "to "be hoped that then no more such delays will occur as on the occasion of the last inward San Francisco mail, when the whole colony south of Tantnaki was needlessly kept waiting for fourteen hours for their Home correspondence. ;
