The Late Mr Tancred.
The late Hon. H • J. Tancred was a younger brother of .the late Sir Thomas Tuncred, who died m Napier four years ago. In his early days he had. been an officer m the Australian cavalry. He came to New Zealand 131 1851, and soon took an active part m politic*. He was twice a member of th» New Zealand Ministry, and was Speaker of the Canter- 1 bury Provincial Council. Mr Tancred was Ion? and intimately connected with the Ngw Zealand University. He was Vice»Ohaiv;ellpr, for some liate, and then was appointed to the chief post. He was always most zealous m trying to advanca its interests. He most ably performed the duties of his high office. He !was possessed of j great learning, and kept up an inmate acquaintance with the classics till the day of his death. Quiet and thoughtful, with plenty of common sense and abundance of tact, he was respected by all Who knew him, and leaves, behind hiril a host of eorrowin? friend*. Mr Tancred some years ajro voluntarily ceased to take An actire interest m politics! The Tancreds claim 3e«oent from the famous men of that name who led one of the great Crusades.
