Retaining Wall Giyen Away. [Post.] About 2 p' c lbck"4n|]fM^y morning a concrete retaining-wall m connection with, the We^ngton-Manawatu B;ailway wofks v lju^eh!y r g^v¥ < w^isnSfell on the road. .1 fc was situated on the Hutt-road, m tbe-neighbotirhood of the Kaiwarra tollgate and was about 100 ft m length, j2oit\ m heigh -p, andy couple of feet m thickness. The cause of the accident ia not certain, so far as we can understand. * If w^tfggested that Lhe "pitching," consisting of large blue stones, was too-heavy for the wall to sustain and that the weight had the effect of bulging the wall<ju{; at.jthe top and throwing it down. On the "other haiid ifcis hazarded that thececenteaijbh<l"ake may have had something to do with the accident. The :) concrete was put up about a year ago, and was left to set for a cougicl6r»ible\.l)eriot[ before the pitching was commenced. We understand that the work, which was iv Mr Saunders' contract, was " extra" work and hds been; :pa|d for by the railcompany, upon whom the loss will .doubtless! fiall. damage is estimated at between £300 anY £400 Tome slight damage has also been sustained by a concrete wall m the vicinity of the tannery r at Ngahauranga.
