Nine Tailors Make a Man.
Tliis phrase originated m the folldwing incident : In 1742 an qrphan boy applied at a fashionable tailor's shop m London, m vhich nine -journey men were employed. Hia interesting apf pearance opened the hearts of the benevolent tailors, who immediately contiri buted nine shillings for the rolief of $ie little stranger. With this capital he purchased fruit, which ho retailed at a profit. Tinie passed on, and wealth and honour smiled upon the .young tradesman, 'go that when he Jset tip his carriage, instead of troubling the college, 'of. heraldry for crest, he painted the fpl lowing motto on the panel of his carri-. age door : f Nine tailors make a man."
