A Sad End.
At t^he, inquest on 'ike" man John Symington who committed suicide at Featherston, the following facts were elicited :—Xhe deceased was some months' snoe m the employ pt Mr Elliotte, of the "White Harl, Carterton, and afterwards worked for .Mr 'x&.. Crawford 4 .as> ostler. From there it appears he/went to Mardnbpro' Hotels -following the same occupation. Some, two months ago he was enuaged. by Mr Bi'unskill of the Royal Hotel, but upon being jen": /to Carterton on- ifome ei\ rand Uid not return, having met some, friend,*",, ',,'and was induced t,O| ha,ye a glass," but on ,l'eturning some days afierwards, he got rather seriously tuimed, through putting his pipe .."iqto the breast coat pocket of his coat, and was admitted into the Greytbwn Hospital., He came pn March 14th,,. to Feather*-' ton, sold hisTiorse, saddle, and bridle; for £JOj and had been clrinking eveV. sincQ/upbili Saturday last, when he was'engaged by Mr H odder' as ostler. The deceased was between 3Q, and 35, years of age, .and is said to be Veil connected m England. At half j)ast 5, on opening his premises, . Mr H.od<]er was, surprised, to finii ' "deceased hahgiha; out" of an upper jwindpw and a pool of blood on the pavement beneath. Deceased was found to be hanging face downwards/ with his legs m the room that he occupied, and on examination his throaLwas found to be cut from ear to ear. m the room lay his pormanteau ujieo, and alongside arazor that, he had evidently, taken out for the purpose for performing^ - the ; fatal operation. The jury, "aft^t; aw-ex tended enquiry, returned a verdict that the deceased comjnitted suicide by cutting* his throat while m a.^fit. of temporafy insanity. The remains of the unforiunate man wore deposited-, in^ the Featherston Oeinetery, the funeral' service being most impressively performed by the Rev. vV. Western. Owing to thp find- j iog oil ceitainid^cumei^s, etc^ among the effects of the deceased," a number uf .the Masonic fraternity decided that as had Jnoi their friends nor money, to se<* him decently interred m his final . resting pjace^pyer^a dozen following m the cortege.
