Steam-Power of the World.
The total horse power of : H the machines and engines worked by steam m the world is e«ii uated at eighty millions. Now, each horse is equa* to at least tea man, so that the steam power' of the globe represents i daily working power of eight hundred millions of men ! The population of the globe has been reckoned by two German savant ? at 1.455,923,000, and the number of male* between fifteen and Bixty<.fiVe years at about one-tbird of the population ; tlm, is round numbers, gives the total of men of the working age at five hundred millions. As the steam engine dpes.the work of about-eight hua* dred millions of men, it folfowsthat, since the invention of Watt and Stephenson spread its beneficent influence overall, civilised countries, the resources of industry have been nearly trebled. And all this has been accomplished before the eteara engine, as a perfected practical agent, is hulf a century old ! j
