Elopement at Wairarapa.
A somewhat sensational account of an alleged elopement is given by the Wairarapa Star. According to our contemporary, a young 1 "remittance man." named Ellers, formerly master, of . the native' school at Te Ore Ore, who ' had married a chief's daughter named Meri Isaiah, has been" for some time converting the property which came . with his wife into bash. A few weeks ago he received L 250 from IJome, and went to Wellington, where he laid seige to M rs . Ted Marphy, wife of a groom. A Masterton tradesman found him' oaf,' and succeeded m getting set- ' tleraenVof'a debt of £200. This in* duced quite a deputation of other Masterton tradesmen to endeavour to find the;^rring 'one, but this time he man- ": aged to keep out of their way. At half-past eleven on Friday (adds -the Star) EUers^nd Mrs Murphy started overland 'in, a, carriage &nd pair en route for I^apier via Masterton; Nothing occurred to ' mar the pleasure of the iugitives' till the^railway bridge at Kaiwarra was reached. lTere- Ted,, Murphy" and a! constable, with ' tyrq-i stalwart assistants, tried to waylay the runaway.*, bufca l.cutting reproof L from the driver compelled them* to release the reins, and Mrs Muvphy waving her handkerchief over her shoulder, drove away from the despairing view of her half-desperato bus hand- At Featherston they had tea, changed horsey -and. telegraphed to Mastertbn, asking Mr Neil to send a ; buggy 'and iman to Carterton to wait their arrival at the Marquis of Novnianby. The order was , complied with^ but m the meantime i somebody had been'g'ood enougVtoap-k'' prise the bereaved and much^-wronged Mrs Ellers of the -escapade. When they arrived m Maslerton^ an unexpected inception awaited Mrs Murphy, for m the dark she leaped into theiacm*bf > i: Mrs Elier%iwho promptly buried her.; hands m her* hair, and gave her A slight? taste of the exquisite bliss which an American realises at the 'hands of a scalping Indian. Loud screams ensued, and the unfaithful Ellens bowled, his,; .shut fist against the eye of the woman he hdd vow&i to cherish till death with; such precision 1 as ! to knock her down and nearly close her • orbit. In the scqffle and uproar that followed, Mrs Murphy aiid tihe ru'nnaway ErTera^faUeU from view, and' " whither :i they have gone or where - they are . ;concea led is now the problem to be solvedf "
