Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DATLY.) Suivant la verite. TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1885. A CAPITAL SUGGESTION.
By telegram we learn that the Canterbury "Frozen Mieat Company have passed the following resolutions.:— " Having m view. Jhe. extremely unsatisfactory nature of! the frozen meat trade m England, esj^ecially as regards the London t charges, and expenses incinTbd/'it is that joint action of the several New Zealand Freezing: Companies may be arranged, and the necessary' action 'taken" to secure some more satisfactory mode^of disposing bf frozen meat and other produce." "That representative** frdm 'the several Meat Freezing Companies be.ihvited Jo meet m Chris tchnrch on some day m Sept. next, when joint, action (Can be also agreed upon m making freight engngement." This is a step that should have been taken long ago. The London charges on frozen meat have been thing alike preposterous and iniquitous*, Jt is through them that the' 'account 1 les which from time to time have been published in' the papers have lefc ; puch a small margin for the producers. There are other matters tha,. the pro-' posed Conference might with advant-" age take into consideration. For instance, the establishment of a system of recognised agencies for / the - sale of frozen meat all over Great Britain.
The h Mm- butchers li.ive doiw, are tluin^. ami will continue to d>> their " level best " against tho into .st^ of the f'olouial meat i*.\])(»rL trade. In numberless ways matters are mis. epreseated L<> the pii-jiuUce of the trade generally, which should be placed on a, different footing altogether froiM that now existing. "If The; frozen lijeat trade is to bo the great lever to lift up tliis Colony i.o a position of prosperity, which is generally expected, that iesult f must be. achiev ed by a fundamental n^forra m the present system of dis ribution and disposal m the Home markets* It is absurd co reflect that what the Home butchers .pay, m ■ L'm-r <ioii od and Gd a pound for, they caii readily .sell at uearly double that price. Why should; not a much larger share of profit accrue to the producer, who is saddle-! with all the extortionary .heavy. London We sincerely tiusL this, Conference . will gel to the root of the evil, ";<nd that" the fruits of its labours. will be apparent m the;4ncreased profits of frozen meat to the exporter, and the enhanced prospects of the trade generally from a Colonial point of view.
