Mr Oliver' Wakefield (Undei'-Secre-tar'y» lor Goldfields), who wks on his way from Wellington to Melbourne by the Waih6ra, ! was killed to day by a steam tram motor iiiPrinceVstveet today. He was crossing the street, and m trying to avoid an express waggon, rwas strnck by the 1 tram' engine and knocked down. The front' wheel* ran over him, but the engine was stopped, before the front-wheels could touch him. ■Ht was tstken to the 'hospital, m ati un ; conscious" state,. and there.' it was found that both his thigh bones were severed, and that hehad received a severe scalp wound. He is a bvotboi- of Mr E. Wakefield, M.H.R., and MfWrtksfieJd lias lieen sent for to come to Dunedin. The doctor amputated bosh his logs, and. he liyed a very short, 1 time; after'warfk i Four doctors performed the operation.
