We feel it our duty to again impress upon our readers the great importance jof* all who possess the necessary qualification taking steps to have their names
placed on the electoral roll of the district m which they reside. It is a great prhilogc to be able to exercise an individual influence ou the wkvtion of our representatives m Parliament. But how many do not value their privilege, or do not consider it as such, or oven that is their duty to place themselves iv a position to record their vote when a general or special election takes place. A contemporary observes that the result of this want of thought is that when, the election comes round they are enrolled by the agents q£;thi.s : or that candidate, 'and fee] morally, bound to support the man by whose: means they have been placed on the , electoral roll. Would it not bo fai ,\ better, it remarks, ami far more m accordance with .elf-reliant principles if every man qualitied to vote placed him.s:elf on the roll before the excitement of an impending election came ! o__, and j thus put himself into the position of! exercising the franchise according ■as • his conscience directed, untrammelled ! by pledge direct or indirect to feuippo'rt this or that or tho othjer: isamiidute'? The time of the next general election is rapidly approaching; at ihe' outsule 1 the big battle will take place before the end of the next year. WV would therefore strongly advise all who are not already on the electoral rolls of Kangitikei, Manawatu, or Foxton to get their names registered without further delay. Forms of registration" can be obtained from the seveial registrar m the three constituencies named, and all the would-be elector hs«s to do is to fill up the foriii supplied to him ; there is no charge whatever. Lest there should be anybody yet unacquainted with the law on the subject; we give the clauses of the Act containing* the qualifications of persons entitled to be placed on tho electoral rolls : — " Every man of the age of twenty-one years or upwards having, of his own right and not as a trustee, a freehold estate m possession situate within any electoral district to the value of twenty-five pounds, whether subject to incutnbrance or not,aud of or to which he has been seized or entitled at law or m equity, for at least six calendar months next before the registration of' his .-vote, is entitled to be registered as an elector and to vote at an election of membßr^ for such district for the House of Keprescntatives; or, every man of. tho age of twenty-one years or upwards who has resided for one year m the colony and m the electoral district for rhioh he claims ,ta vote, during- the six months immediately preceding the registered of his ivqte, ' and is not registration m respect of a'ffeehold qualification under this Act for the same district, is entitled to be registered as an elector and to vote at the election • : bf. members for such district for the House of Bepresentatives."
